An outdoor art exhibit features a bronze statue of a seated woman in the foreground. Several people are walking around and observing artwork, with some sitting on benches or the grass. There is a white pavilion and various colorful paintings displayed inside. The sky is bright with scattered clouds, and trees surround the area.

National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne

In Collaboration with artist Matthew de Moiser

Canvas has a strong connection to the NGV site; from the paintings hanging on the gallery walls today to the site’s history as the home of the Wirth’s Circus’ big top tents and earlier still to the camps that emerged south of the Yarra during the 1850’s gold rush. Dubbed Canvas Town it represented the hopes and dreams of boom town Melbourne.

Today it is the suburban home that embodies these aspirations — more than just shelter, our homes are our canvas, and perhaps even our primary medium for creative thought and expression. The Carte Blanche pavilion deconstructs a typical suburban home as a series of blank canvas panels for the people of Melbourne to collectively express themselves with.
