An outdoor scene featuring a modern building with a crisscross wooden framework and a large netted wall, surrounded by trees, a park with people, and a blue sky with clouds and birds.

NGV Summer Commission 2016

National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne

For the 2016 summer commission we propose to engage with the history of the NGV itself – the original 1968 building that has served Melbournians for many summers since. A built memory.

We propose a ghost – a merging of the three original courts into a built temporary structure that embraces qualities of the original courtyards. Grounds’ NGV had outdoor space and water as key themes.

Within the sculpture garden we sit a rectangular object of the original dimension of the lost courts. An infrastructure for events and performance, it frames the view to the sky as the original courts did.
